USAID’s READ activity arranged Learning Sharing of Beyond Access Bangladesh Project with Minister of Cultural Affairs
Beyond Access Bangladesh and the Department of Public Libraries (DPL) organized the result sharing program to share successes and lessons learned to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, DPL, DPE, Bangladesh Shishu Academy (BSA) and likeminded NGOs. The event showcased the intervention’s effectiveness and areas for improvement by sharing and discussing the endline evaluation results of Beyond Access Bangladesh. The major objectives of the event were to share the successes of the project and to advocate likeminded NGOs to use the model for improving the reading skills of grade I to III children.
Asaduzzaman Noor, Honorable Minister, Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Government of Bangladesh, was present as chief guest. The minister acquiesced with library interventions of the Beyond Access Bangladesh project. He denied terming going to the library as an extra-curricular activity. Creating interest for library among the children will result in improved learning. Parents should play a major role making their children interested in the library. Children need an enjoyable environment to learn. He also emphasized on promoting enjoyable learning environment at the schools.
Dr. Ishtiaq Mannan, Deputy Country Director – Program Operations, Save the Children International contextualized the event with the major focus on the activities of Beyond Access Bangladesh project. He emphasized the importance of the library as an out of school learning place. He also termed library as a place for talent cultivation. Caroll Vasquez, Office Director, Office of Population, Health, Nutrition and Education USAID Bangladesh thanked save the children and IREX for the library initiative. She appreciated this innovative approach which increase the literacy skills of the students.
Chaired by Ashish Kumar Saha, Director General, Department of Public Library, the event also included Shahin Islam, Acting CoP & Deputy Director- Deputy Director and Ari Kartz, Regional Director, IREX. The event was concluded by the closing remarks from Ashish Kumar Saha followed by an exhibition of the library interventions of the project.
