READ organized roundtables in different regions

In the month of August 2017, READ organized three regional media roundtables in Cox’s Bazar, Khagracchari, and Barisal. Through these regional media roundtables, READ had been able to reach 75 local journalists of 10 upazilas from six districts (Cox’s Bazar - August 8, 2017, Khagracchari - August 17, 2017, Barisal, Patuakhali, Barguna, and Jhalokathi - August 23, 2017).

A total of 25 local journalists from national, local, online media, and television channels participated in each roundtable. They were oriented on role of media media in responding to the changes in primary education in Bangladesh, Bangla reading competency and its impact on children’s overall academic achievement. The participant journalists also conveyed the challenges they face in order to cover the issues regarding primary education in local and national newspapers. It brought out some recommendations from the journalists to ensure wider and effective coverage of primary education in Bangladesh. Besides the journalists government officials from Divisional Primary Education Office, District Primary Education Office, Instructors from Upazila Resource Center (URC), and presidents of district press clubs were present in the roundtables.

In addition to the 75 local journalists reached in August, 2017, 46 journalists participated in a media roundtable organized by READ in June, 2017, in Magura.
