Plan for Earthquake Preparedness in Narayanganj Stressed
An earthquake contingency plan involving all the relevant ministries and departments of the government, agencies and NGOs needs to be taken for any possible quake in Narayanganj city, according to the speakers.
They said that in a workshop titled ‘The Role of Local Government in Earthquake Preparedness’ jointly organized by the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief (MoDMR), Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) and Save the Children , on 16 May in Narayanganj. NCC is the first city corporation to take such an initiative and it is expected that other city corporations would follow the example.
While giving her welcoming remarks, Dr. Salina Hayat Ivy, the Honorable Mayor of NCC said, “We are working to make Narayganj well prepared for and kind of disasters but still we need to go miles. Earthquake and fire are still big challenges for us as don’t have adequate open spaces and water reservoirs in the city”. She also emphasized on school based disaster management and highlighted the importance of disaster education to make children and communities aware.
Md. Shah Kamal, Secretary, (MoDMR), attending the workshop as the chief guest said, “We need to involve and encourage urban citizens in larger number to take part in such awareness building workshop on disaster risk reduction”. He stated MoDMR is always ready to cooperate with NCC by providing equipment and training support for engineers, bar-binders and masons who are involved with construction.” He urged international organization like Save the Children to continue working together with Fire Service & Civil Defense to increase the number of volunteers.
Md. Mostak Hossain, Director-Humanitarian Save the Children said, “It is a timely initiative of MoDMR. Save The Children is happy to be a part of it”. He further added “we need to be better prepared for urban disasters like earthquake and fire and make contingency plan for that. I thank the Mayor of NCC for setting an example for other city corporations”.
Earlier, two keynote papers were shared with the audiences. First one was on the causes and preparations of earthquake, presented by Lt. Col. Mosharrof Hussain psc, Director-Training, Planning and Development of Bangladesh Fire service and Civil Defence (FSCD) and the other one was on the ‘Vision 2030 strategy and recommended to have an earthquake contingency plan for newly formed NCC’ made by Md. Moinul Islam, Town Planner from the NCC
Among others Satyabrata Saha, Additional secretary, MoDMR. Md. Reaz Ahmed, Director General, Department of Disaster Management, Rafiqul Islam Mojumder, District Relief & Rehabilitation Officer (DRRO)-Narayanganj and Sharon Hauser, Director- Program Development and Quality, Save the Children also spoke in the event.
The event was attended by Ward Councilors, Urban Community Volunteers and representatives from local government, NGOs and media.
