National Disaster Preparedness Day celebrated in Bangladesh
The National Disaster Preparedness Day (NDPD) was observed across the country on March 10, 2017 with emphasis on expediting disaster preparedness programmes among the people and making them well equipped for lowering the risk of natural calamities. Save the Children organized activities to celebrate NDPD jointly with Bangladesh Shishu Academy, Department of Disaster Management (DDM) of Ministry of Disaster Management & Relief (MoDMR), Department of Fire Service and Civil Defense (FSCD), DC office of Dhaka, Plan International Bangladesh and Friendship. Activities included art competition, earth quake and fire simulation and display of different IEC materials.
Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury was present as chief guest in the inaugural session. He urged the people to have immediate weather alerts on their phones by dialing 1090 before they leave home. “For this, none will have to pay the mobile operators any charge,” the minister informed, underscoring the need for raising awareness about this to trim down natural disasters and resultant sufferings. President of Disaster Management and Relief related Parliamentary Committee Dhirendra Devnath and Disaster Management and Relief Secretary Shah Kamal have attended the programme. Later, guests visited different stalls including stall of Save the Children where materials related to disaster preparedness were displayed.
