Tuesday 25 October 2016

Maternal and child health indicators of Bangladesh generally make for good reading, but not so when it comes to neonatal mortality rates. Prematurity and low birth-weight continue to cause a large number of infants’ death, very often because there is not adequate specialized life-saving care services available. The Special Care Newborn Unit (SCANU) set up in Lakshmipur District Hospital thus marks an important progress in newborn health care of the district. MaMoni HSS supported the DGHS to establish the SCANU which was formally inaugurated on October 19th , 2016.

“The SCANU would lead to significant improvement of newborn care in Lakshmipur District,” observed Dr. Samina Chowdhury, Project Management Specialist, USAID Bangladesh, at the event held at Lakshmipur Zila Parishard Conference Room. Presided by the Civil Surgeon of the district Mostafa Khaled Ahmed, the event was joined by among others Patricia Dally, Associate Vice-President, Department of Global Health, Save the Children, USA. She lauded Bangladesh’s efforts in curbing maternal and child mortality rates and said Save the Children would like to work closely with the government and expand its work to benefit mothers and children across the country.
