Lakshmipur gets its first Special Care Unit for newborns
Maternal and child health indicators of Bangladesh generally make for good reading, but not so when it comes to neonatal mortality rates. Prematurity and low birth-weight continue to cause a large number of infants’ death, very often because there is not adequate specialized life-saving care services available. The Special Care Newborn Unit (SCANU) set up in Lakshmipur District Hospital thus marks an important progress in newborn health care of the district. MaMoni HSS supported the DGHS to establish the SCANU which was formally inaugurated on October 19th , 2016.
“The SCANU would lead to significant improvement of newborn care in Lakshmipur District,” observed Dr. Samina Chowdhury, Project Management Specialist, USAID Bangladesh, at the event held at Lakshmipur Zila Parishard Conference Room. Presided by the Civil Surgeon of the district Mostafa Khaled Ahmed, the event was joined by among others Patricia Dally, Associate Vice-President, Department of Global Health, Save the Children, USA. She lauded Bangladesh’s efforts in curbing maternal and child mortality rates and said Save the Children would like to work closely with the government and expand its work to benefit mothers and children across the country.
Joby George, Chief of Party, MaMoni HSS Project, remarked that MaMoni HSS project, over the last three years, had made important contribution to the improvement of maternal and child health care in the district. “The project has strived to increase demand for health care and then bring in all the mothers and children under the health care coverage,” he added.
Dr Abu Kaiser Mahmud Saydur Rahman, Director, Hospital and Clinic, felt that the establishment of SCANU was a milestone in newborn care and thanked USAID for its continued support. He also stressed on monitoring and supervision by health managers to ensure the quality of care provided at different facilities.
Dr. Altaf Hossain, PM-IMCI, DGHS also spoke in the event with district and upazila health officials along with representatives of local administration present among others.
