International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking observed

Save the Children observed the ‘International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’ on July 26, 2017 with various events organized by direct implementation (DI) of HIV/AIDS program and colleagues also participated in various national programs to mark the day. The slogan of the year was ‘Listen First: Listening to the children and youth is the first step for help them to grow healthy and safe’. Every year the day is observed on June 26 around the world, however, due to Eid vacation, it was decided to observe on July 26, 2017.  

DI has arranged special discussion sessions at the drop in centers (DICs) for people who inject drugs (PWID) inviting friends and family members of PWID, members of DIC advisory committee and community elites. A week long ‘information booth’ was also established to disseminate various drug-related information.

The national program was organized by Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) under Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) that included a human chain and rally in-front of the High Court and a seminar and exhibition at the Osmani Memorial Hall, Dhaka. More than 50 staff members from DI attended the rally with colorful banner and festoon. Honorable Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan MP graced the seminar as chief guest.  There were exhibition booths at the venue displaying materials of NGOs including Save the Children to reduce the risk of drug abuse. Minister visited the booth and appreciated the work. Mr. Jamal Uddin Ahmed, Directorate General, Mr. Farid Uddin Chowdhuary, Secretary of Surakha Bibagh, DNC and Advocate Abdul Baset Majumder, Member of DNC Board were present during the visit.
