Inter-University Debate Competition to raise awareness among youth on environment starts in Dhaka

Department of Environment (DoE), BUET Debating Club and Save the Children are currently organizing a debate competition on environment among students of universities in Bangladesh to celebrate upcoming World Environment Day 2018. World Environment Day is the UN's most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. Dr. Sultan Ahmed, DG of Department of Environment inaugurated 7th inter-university environment debate on May 14, 2018. "Human beings are primarily responsible for pollution and action must be taken by us immediately to reverse the trend"- said DG of Department of Environment under Ministry of Environment & Forest.

Dr. Mir Tareque Ali, Professor and Head, Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, BUET attended as special guests. “While teaching students, we come across different issues related to lives under water. Due to human actions, lives under water get affected’- he said. He also tanked Save the Children for supporting the debate competition. Mirza Shawkat Ali, Director (Climate change & International Convention) of DoE moderated the inaugural session.

A total of 16 universities are participating in the debate program. Apart from host BUET, participating universities include Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, Chittagong University, Rajshahi University, Khulna University, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, North South University and Brac University.
